The Mastery Learning Method
Each of the Math skills programs offered at
The Mastery Learning Centre is based on the philosophy that all children can become
achievers if taught at a level of their own proficiency, and encouraged to progress at a
rate of their ability to master clearly defined units of learning. These units of learning
or "skills" are introduced in a sequential and systematic fashion and reinforced
in the learning environment until the student demonstrates mastery in that area. This
concept is referred to as "Mastery Learning."
The consistent experience of being able to successfully achieve
manageable units of learning at his or her own level of proficiency will serve to remove
many of the frustrations often experienced by children who may need extra help in learning
some skills, and soon build confidence in the child S bringing a sense of
accomplishment and joy into the learning environment.
Based on this philosophy of learning, the Mastery Learning Centre was
founded in January 2001, and since that time has served more than 1,000 students in the
Mississauga area. It offers after-School and Saturday classes throughout the school year,
and morning and afternoon classes during the months of July and August. In order to meet
the needs of each child as thoroughly as possible the student-teacher ratio never exceeds
three-to-one, and for students in High School, not more than two-to-one.
